2010 Cinema One Originals Digital Film Festival

The movies are novelty. The stories are unpredictable. The talents are a mix of flag bearers and an emerging new breed. These are what make the 6th Cinema One Originals Digital Film Festival a highly anticipated event when it opens at the Shang Cineplex of Edsa Shangri-La Plaza. Its equally awaited awards night will be held on November 14 at the Dolphy Theater of the ABS-CBN.

Spearheaded by the country's number 1 movie cable channel Cinema One, and helmed by its Director for Programming Ronald Arguelles, this year's festival is anticipated to be a success and is part of the ongoing 16 Year Anniversary of Cinema One's leadership in local cinema. The festival will also award its Cinema One Original Tribute to two filmmakers who are pillars in local cinema: Celso Ad Castillo and Lav Diaz. This award and tribute was given to director Danny Zialcita as its first recipient.

Chosen through careful deliberation from over 100 entries, this year's seven finalists possess liberating out-of-the-box storytelling. They have potentials to open a new genre or combine genres and make names for its directors, writers and actors. The seven finalists and competing digital movie entries this year are: Ang Damgo ni Eleuteria by Remton Siega Zuasola, a novelty comedy of a young provincial lass who becomes a mail order bride to hoist her family from poverty. Third World Happy of writer-director E JSalcedo is a melodrama about a "balikbayan" artist who has spent most of his life abroad but whose perspectives in life changes when he comes home to attend a funeral and reunites with his friends and girlfriend. Astro Mayabang of director Jason Paul Laxamana is a social satire about a financially, socially, intellectually and sexually frustrated man who boasts of his nationalism and Pinoy pride, but ends up humiliated because of his misguided and aggressive ways. Dagim by director Joaquin Pedro Valdes who also co-wrote it with J. Eliseo Sandico is about two farm brothers whose search for their lost father lead them to a company of strange mountain inhabitants.

Ishmael by Richard Somes who gave us last year's most triumphant winner Yanggaw, is about an ex-convict who is ostracized by his neighborhood. Little does he know that this neighborhood he once knew is set to awaken his past. Tsardyer by writer-director Sigfreid Barros-Sanchez is based on a true-to-life story of a young boy who was tasked by rebel soldiers to charge their phones used for their negotiations with the government while holding the media people they kidnapped. Layang Bilanggo is a family drama about a fugitive on the run who yearns for the love of his daughter that he abandoned several years ago and disguises in an attempt to get near her.

Amigo Plaza's 2010 Ilonggo Short Film Competition

To all Ilonggo amateur and hobbyist film makers out there, here is your chance to show off your talents and skills. Join Amigo Plaza Mall’s Ilonggo Short Film Competition and showcase the best of Ilonggo in the film  making. Big prizes awaits the best entries. 2010 Ilonggo Short Film Competition GUIDELINES:

1. The 2010 ILONGGO SHORT FILM COMPETITION is presented by Amigo Plaza Mall in cooperation with ABS-CBN (Iloilo) and is organized by TMX in association with the film & video expertise of the Faculty of the Asia Pacific College (School of Multimedia Arts).
2. The contest is open to a group of students and/or organization (minimum of three and maximum of 15 in a group) and must represent a school and/or company.
3. Only Narrative Shorts will be accepted. Animated and/or experimental works will only be accepted if they are infused in a narrative work. Purely experimental works (such as abstractions, non-linear, etc.), documentary videos and animated optics without a story will NOT be accepted. Since
4. Running time is set to a minimum of five (5) minutes to a maximum of fifteen (15) minutes only including opening and closing credits. Short films that do not conform to this rule shall not be accepted.
5. Submission format will be DVD only. Any other video format will NOT be accepted.
6. No specific themes will be provided for this competition but filmmakers are encouraged to tackle any Ilonggo theme, lifestyle and/or culture in very creative ways.
7. Submissions must be in Hiligaynon with English subtitles otherwise the work will NOT be accepted.
8. Works shall be judged according to the technical elements of film & video, highly-regarding film & video as creative mediums.
9. Prizes include: Best Short Film (P10,000.00 for the filmmaker/s plus a 21” color TV for the school/company it represents); 2nd Prize (P5,000.00 for the filmmaker/s); 3rd Prize (P3,000 for the filmmaker/s); Two (2) Runners-up (P1,500.00 each); Highest Receipt Votes (P1,500.00); Audience Award (Certificate).
10. Highest Receipt Votes shall be determined per submitted receipts. One (1) vote for every P100 worth of receipts from the period August 1, 2010 to September 29, 2010 from mall tenants only and from stores within the Amigo Plaza Mall.
11. Audience Award shall be determined by the actual votes from those who have attended the short film screenings.
12. The competition shall be judged by five (5) selected filmmakers to comprise the Board of Jury. For professional and technical considerations, the selection of the Board of Jury, the film selections and the judging processes shall be coordinated and moderated by the Film & Video Faculty of the Asia Pacific College (School of Multimedia Arts) in Makati City. TMX and Amigo Plaza Mall will not participate in the judging process and shall only take care of the “Highest Receipt Votes” and the “Audience Award” tally.
13. Deadline of submission of entries is on September 25, 2010. After the set deadline, TMX and Amigo Plaza Mall shall mail all DVD entries to the Asia Pacific College (School of Multimedia Arts) for the judging process.
14. Results shall be sent by the Asia Pacific College to TMX and Amigo Plaza Mall via snail mail and e-mail.
15. Decisions made by the Board of Jury are final and are not subject to appeal. No protests of any kind shall be accommodated.
16. The Board of Jury may reward special jury prizes to worthy entries and winners of these special awards will take home Jury Certificates signed by them.
17. First degree up to the third degree of consanguinity relatives of TMX employees and Amigo Plaza Mall employees are disqualified from joining this competition.
18. Registration period will be on August 1, 2010 to August 21, 2010. Submission of entries is on September 25, 2010. Awarding Ceremony is on October 8, 2010.

Action! CINEMALAYA YEAR 6 Begins

The Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival 2010, now on its sixth year, is a project of the Cinemalaya Foundation, Inc., in partnership with the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) and Econolink Investments, Inc. (EII). It will be held on July 9 to 18, 2010.

In the spirit of independent expression, the Cinemalaya Awards seeks to discover, encourage and honor the cinematic works of Filipino filmmakers that boldly articulate and freely interpret the Filipino experience with fresh insight and artistic integrity.

The works will be:
* narrative features that articulate the Filipino identity and culture
* in digital video format-to take advantage of this new, more accessible technology
* open to both filmmakers who have not yet directed a full-length commercial film, and filmmakers who have directed not more than three full-length commercial films.

There will be two main categories
* Short Feature–from 15 to 20 minutes
* Full-Length Feature – from 90 to 120 minutes.

Ten finalists were selected for the Full-length Feature category while ten finalists were selected for the Short Feature category. In the Full-length Feature Film category, each of the ten finalists received a P500,000.00 seed grant from Cinemalaya Foundation, Inc. as investment for the production.

The Awards are:

* The Best Short Feature Film will receive a grant of P100,000.00 and the Balanghai Trophy.
* The Best Full-length Feature Film will receive a grant of P200,000.00 and the Balanghai Trophy. Awards for both categories will be given on 18 July 2009 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

A new section, the Open Category, is being introduced this year. This section features Filipino filmmakers who have directed at least three full-length feature films which have been released commercially. Five finalists were selected to compete in this category.

The Semana Sang Iloilo Film and Video Competition 2010 announced

In connection with the celebration of the Semana sang Iloilo on April 6 to April 11, 2010, the Province of Iloilo presents the 1st Semana Sang Iloilo Film and Video Competition. Province of Iloilo and the Provincial Council for Culture, Arts, History and Tourism Division Independent Film & Video Competition seeks to promote Ilonggo independent filmmaking by giving recognition to the year's most outstanding Ilonggo film and video artists. The contest rules are as follows:

CONTEST RULES
1.Open to all residents of the City and Province Of Iloilo. Employees of the PCCHAT and their close relations are disqualified from participating in the competition.

2.Entries may be in the following format:
•FILM - 16mm, 35mm
•VIDEO – DVD, MiniDV3.All works must be strictly independent works and not produced for commercial screening. School-based work (e.g. theses) are allowed.

4.Entries must have been completed on or after March 2009.

5.Each participant is allowed a maximum of two (2) entries.

6.Entry subject is open however works which concentrates on positive ilonggo culture and destinations are highly recommended.

7.A digital video entry (DVD or MiniDV) must contain only one (1) title.

9.Awards for winning entries shall be given to the filmmaker/director indicated in the entry form. For joint directorial works, the group must assign a single representative to act in its behalf. All official communications shall be addressed to this representative. The Province of Iloilo and PCCAHT shall not be liable for any controversy re the sharing of awards among the members of the group.

10.The decision of the Board of Judges is final. The board reserves the right not to give awards in any category should no entry merit it. In the case of ambivalence, the jurors shall decide the category of the entry.

11.Cash prizes are as follows:
•1st PRIZE - P15,000.00
•2nd PRIZE - P10,000.00
•3rd PRIZE - P5,000.00

12.Honorable mentions may be awarded by the jury, in consultation with The Province of Iloilo and PCCAHT officials, with cash equivalent and/or changes in the prize structure.

13.All cash prizes are subject to standard government tax on prizes and awards (20%).

14.Entries must be submitted not later than 6:00pm, March 30, 2010 at the PCCAHT Office (2nd Floor, Iloilo Old Capitol Bldg).

15.Winners shall be announced in the awards ceremony during the festival week, and in the leading dailies right after. Winners will also be informed by phone, mail, email or telegram after the competition.

16.The Province of Iloilo reserves the right to exhibit the entries, winning or not, during the festival week. Also, The Province reserves the right not to screen entries it deems unsuitable for public screening.

17.Winning entries will be archived (copied to disc) by the PCCAHT for library purposes, as well as for possible inclusion in PCCAHT programs and productions. Films/videos shown will be properly compensated based on existing copyright laws.

Cinemanila 2009 announces films competing in different sections

The 11th Cinemanila Intenational Fim Festival has recently released its finalists for the Digital Lokal Section (Philippine digital films); Young Cinema Section (Shorts in Competition and Exhibition); and SEA Shorts (Southeast Asian Shorts in Competition and Exhibition). The selected films are as follows:

The finalists for this year's Digital Lokal are Christopher Gozum's Anacbanua, Armando "Bing" Lao's Biyaheng Lupa, Jon Red's Beerhouse, Lito Casaje's Dolores, Ted Manotoc's 69 1/2 and Bona Fajardo's Iliw.

For Young Cinema Competition the finalists are Janus Victoria's Dalaw, Mikhail Red's Harang, Antoinette Jadaone's Ito ang Gabing Babalikan Kita Pagkatapos ng Tatlong Taon nang Hindi Maiiyak at Masasaktan, Ice Idanan's Limang Libo, Ramon del Prado's Save Me!!!, Emmanuel Quindo Palo's Stations, and Remton Siega's Zuasola To Siomai Love.

The 11th Cinemanila International Film Festival

The 11th Cinemanila International Film Festival will be held from October 15 to 25, 2009 in Bonifacio Global City in Taguig. Around 100 international and local films will be screened in a span of 10 days—from the current toasts of the local indie scene to the award-winners and favorites at prestigious festivals such as Cannes, Berlin, Rotterdam, Sundance, and Pusan.
