MUNICH

MUNICH
Understanding Violent Conflict

By Reymundo Salao

Set in the aftermath of the massacre of 11 Israeli athletes at the 1972 Munich Olympics, the story follows a secret Israeli squad assigned to track down and kill the 11 Palestinians suspected to have planned the Munich attack--and the personal toll this mission of revenge takes on the team and the man who led it.

The film was very careful to open the film by saying “Inspired by real events” because until the secret files open up legitimately, nobody will really know or confirm the events that transpired in this movie. This film is based upon George Jonas’ book “Vengeance”. And this film project was denied by Spielberg thrice before he finally agreed to direct it later on. MUNICH is a very intelligent mixture of Cold-war politics, drama, espionage, and an age-old conflict that carries with it a legacy of hate and vindication. The film centers its storyline on a secret mission of the Mossad, which is the Israeli spy network, to eliminate the key members of the Black September, the Arab group responsible for the Munich massacre.

Spielberg captures the essence of the 70's even with the entire cinematographic look of the film. This movie seems to employ the kind of film that is used in the 70's; its grainy and high-contrast quality; to the point that it really feels like watching an old movie made in the 70's. Although that is not anymore a new technique among other filmmakers, it does have that Spielberg touch of intelligent drama. That which never ignores the more serious point-of-view of the characters. And running at almost three hours, the movie employs a rich sense of character development.

Without a doubt, Eric Bana, who is indeed one of those new actors that are reaching a very respected high profile level of being an actor, fit to be considered as one of the gold standards, is the lead character of this film. He seems to remind me of how Liam Neeson broke through with his reputation when he starred in "Schindler's List" which was also directed by Steven Spielberg. Also among its rich cast are the very respected Academy awards winner Geoffrey Rush as government agent, Ephraim, there's also the wickedly cool Daniel Craig (who is confirmed as the next James Bond) as Steve, and Ciaran Hinds (best known for his lead role in HBO's ROME mini-series) as Carl, the clean-up artist.

This film has struck controversy, not only because according to many critics, it seems that Spielberg was becoming all too-ultra-pro-Jewish (well, you can’t really blame him for that, he is, after all, Jewish, isn’t he?) and also because critics judge this film to be a work that is seemingly pro-terrorist. Sure, a large chunk of the main storyline involves the drive of vindication; the seemingly heroic and patriotic duty of carrying out the message of death and destruction upon those who are enemies of the country you swore to protect. Understandably, many will misinterpret it as a glorification of hatred and violent vengeance. But ultimately, the movie will later make the effort to make audiences realize that all the acts of violence that were committed seemed to go nowhere; fruitless; empty. MUNICH is a very serious movie of deep, thought-provoking impact. Another instant classic by Steven Spielberg.

BAD SERVICE (Junkie Article)

I was GREATLY DISAPPOINTED with this one theater where I watched this movie from. Last Wednesday, I was going to watch its 6:05 PM because the sked of the other theater was in gross conflict with my own sked as an office worker. I bought the ticket and as I got in at exactly 6 PM, hoping that I would watch the movie from the start, but I was surprised that it was ALREADY IN THE MIDDLE PART OF THE MOVIE (And to think that this was a three-hour serious film)! I went out to ask the ticket lady what was going on and she told me that there was a delay in the screening and this screening started at 5 PM and that the next screening was going to start 8 PM! I couldn’t do much by now since I cannot just wait for two hours just to watch the movie from the start! That really pissed me off. They should’ve made notice outside of the delay or of the change of schedule before I was able to buy my ticket! This seems like something that deserves a law suit, but I’m just going to rant about it on this paper. Too bad I cannot point out which theater it is exactly. But it’s the one that seems to take movie-goers for granted because this wasn’t the first time that they had their screening schedules screwed up. I also ranted before about how I’m unhappy with how this theater presents their trailers too. Well anyway, I hope they wake up! Wake up, SM City Cinema!

SAW II

SAW 2: DISTURBINGLY DIABOLICAL
A Must See for Horror fans!
By Reymundo Salao

"I want to play a game..." the first SAW movie shows us a scene wherein a naked guy wakes up trapped in complex cage in an underground room. He is told that a timer is set and after several minutes, the door to exit the room will automatically be lock shut PERMANENTLY and may lock him there forever. The only way he can get through the door is if he survives crawling and squeezing himself through a caged passageway which is filled with entangling barbed wires. Will he just do nothing and be locked forever? Or does he risk his life to go through the barbed wire cage? (You can check out the review of the first SAW movie here)

The first SAW movie blew our minds with its concept. The film itself introduces and shocks us with the serial killer known by the alias "Jigsaw" who traps his victims into a complex and deadly game wherein which the victims are being put in a booby-trapped situation wherein they could die or survive their predicament by doing torturous tasks upon themselves. It asks you the question - How much blood will you shed to stay alive?

In SAW 2, Jigsaw is back with more complex and twistingly nefarious games. Being overwhelmed by the concept was just enough for the first film; this sequel goes to the next level by adding more spice to its already diabolical concept by uraveling many unanswered questions, specifically that of who and why is Jigsaw committing all these very distubing "games".

Along with SAW director James Wan and writer/co-star Leigh Whannell serving as executive producers, the producers re-assembled the first film's creative team, with David Armstrong returning as cinematographer, Kevin Greutert back on board as editor, and former Nine Inch Nails member Charlie Clouser reenlisted as composer, delivers that same gritty atmosphere of the first movie. This sequel is directed by first-time director Darren Lynn Bousman, whose previous works included only commercials and music videos, but nevertheless managed to create a flawless masterpiece.

Like the first one, SAW is one movie that scares the living daylights out of me because Jigsaw is the kind of killer that can exist in real life. And, much worse, there is a sense of futility if one is under one of his games. Jigsaw, in his mind, believes that he doesn't kill people - he leaves all of the decisions up to them. He believes that people don't appreciate their lives, and they can only learn to appreciate their lives by being forced to fight for survival. This manner of twisted logic is elaborated in this movie.

But to elaborate much on the storyline of SAW 2 may give out a spoiler. And this is the kind of movie that you don’t want others to spoil for you. Believe me when I tell you that you better not make the mistake of getting in the movie theater just in time for the revelations at the last minutes of this movie. SAW 2 is best watched from start to finish (Don’t worry folks, you can check out the screening schedules at my website).

SAW may be very wicked but the extent of its gore never goes beyond the needlessness and sloppiness of B-movie gore movies. While its violence is very much present, it never goes beyond the vulgarity level of a decent (excuse the irony) violent horror movie. Oh yes, there is enough bloodshed, but SAW 2's horror is more psychological, and does not just rely on the visceral. SAW 2 is scary, shocking, diabolical, and above all, impressive. Hardcore fans of horror movies should NOT miss this one out.

UNDERWORLD: EVOLUTION

UNDERWORLD: EVOLUTION
THIS SEASON’S ULTIMATE ACTION EXPERIENCE!
By Reymundo Salao

As the war between the legions of the Vampires and the Lycans (werewolves) simmers down with the death of Lycan leader Lucien and the vampire elder Viktor, there is a new dread that threatens mankind. The other elder, Marcus awakens from his centuries old slumber, and in his awakening, he intends to unlock secrets that can enable him to finally spread his wings of evil upon the entirety of mankind, making himself a god. It is now up to the vampire Selene and the Lycan hybrid Michael Corvin to stop this from happening.

UNDERWORLD: EVOLUTION is the sequel of the instant cult hit UNDERWORLD. Its storyline continues the dangerous fate of vampire soldier Selene and the hybrid Michael Corvin. While the first movie is about the Vampire and Lycan conflict, the discovery of Michael’s powers, Selene’s uncovering of her real past, and the tales of conspiracy and betrayal, “Evolution” intends to provide more answer to the questions that surround the Underworld.

Aside from a prologue flashback sequence into centuries past, the story proper opens directly after the events that transpired in the first UNDERWORLD movie. So if you happen to have a DVD or VCD copy of the first movie, it is best to watch it before you go watch this movie. If you have not watched or have no idea whatsoever about the first UNDERWORLD movie, then you can just sit back and enjoy all the action, stunts, gore (or lack of gore, as rendered by the MTRCB's annoying cuts), special effects, and the explosive eye candy of this movie. Probably to meet up with the PG-13 rating that the MTRCB gave, which is wrong because this film was intended to be an R-rating movie. The US's MPAA lists the movie as "Rated R for pervasive strong violence and gore, some sexuality/nudity and language".

UNDERWORLD has a massive cult following; especially appealing to those who are into gothic subculture, into cult monster flicks, and those who are just into plain hardcore action. But apart from your ordinary default-type, plain eye-candy action, and ultra-cliche monster horrors, UNDERWORLD has that ardent following because of its intriguing storyline, and because director Len Wiseman does deliver this movie with an appealing style reminiscent of movies like "The Crow" (the first one directed by Alex Proyas) and "The Matrix", which stand out from just your typical action flick. Wiseman’s visual eye for the film reflects Proyas’ tendency to deliver a gothic monochromatic atmosphere that works for movies like these. Wiseman also manages to balance well the dialogue, the mystery, the thrills, and the action, into a movie that never is boring. If you were gravely disappointed by the last “Blade” movie, worry not, “Evolution” may be that remedy for you.

Of course, the goddess-hot Kate Beckinsale (who is married to the director Len Wiseman…LUCKY GUY!) is, herself, the movie's main eye-candy, especially in all that super-tight outfit. She plays the lead character Selene with just the right mixture of grace, enigma, allure, and ferocity as an action heroine. I'm just sorry to inform all you guys that the supposed steamy love scene was cut down by the MTRCB as well.

In pure fairness, one must expect this movie to indeed be a macho atom bomb of hard rock action eye candy. Incredible jumps, unbelievable martial arts, big guns, monster fights, and a rockin' bad-ass gargoyle-like vampire with ultra-wicked bat wings. (I freakin' love it!) If you're looking for some Oscar-worthy material, go watch “Brokeback Mountain” with a guy-friend. The problem with critics hating movies like UNDERWORLD is that they want each and every movie ever made to be something that senior-citizen Humanities teachers would let their high school students watch for a film reaction term paper. No, “Underworld: Evolution” is far from being the kind of movie you go to sleep to.

Perhaps the critics were just too ignorant of caring to understand the cool depth of the movie. They would immediately push their verdict calling this a stupid eye candy just because they weren’t able to understand the storyline, which really is actually an interesting complex tale of age-old conflicts and tragic revelations. If you think of dumb cliché action films, you think of movies like “Bad Boys 2” and “2 Fast 2 Furious”, but NOT this movie. UNDERWORLD: EVOLUTION is far from being dull and predictable; this film is the ultimate scorching hot action film of the season.

JARHEAD

JARHEAD: OUTSTANDING!
By Reymundo Salao

Based on the book by Anthony Swofford and his experiences in the first Gulf war and life as a member of the Marines, JARHEAD is a personal movie that tells the life of Anthony "Swoff" Swofford as a Marine. The story starts the day he got himself in the Marine Corps. And later on, as the US Government sends its forces into the Middle East to await for an impending war, we get to witness the lives of the Marines as they wait for war to come. We see many of their boredom, loneliness, and insanity as they live their long days out in the desert to wait for a war that doesn’t seem to happen.

There are numerous movies that I have watched about lives of soldiers, from Stanley Kubrick's "FULL METAL JACKT" to the Robin Padilla movie "MISTAH", and may it be action-packed or not, these are movies that always give us a most interesting glimpse of the many adventures, struggles, and reflections that a soldier goes through.

Do not expect JARHEAD to be a Rambo-type action movie. This is a movie that focuses more on the soldier's lives, and not on the politics of the war that they have gone through. Their most fierce war is one fought with themselves. Their inner demons and how they can cope with the many pains they go through.

On the other hand, there is enough wit in JARHEAD to render you giggling at even some of the seriously dramatic scenes. There is even the twin side of drama and humor in scenes where the soldiers must confront the possibility that the women they love and left back home are sleeping with other men.

The film is directed by Sam Mendes, whose reputed body of work includes the multi-awarded "American Beauty" and the Tom Hanks gangster-noir drama film "Road to Perdition". In JARHEAD, Mendes is able to create a war movie without exaggerating too much on the cliché of anti-war-ism. Instead, he just tells soldier-life as it is; the boredom and frustration, the anxieties, and the craziness. And of course, the camaraderie. He also marinates this movie with groovy soundtracks, from Bobby McFerrin's "Don't Worry, Be Happy" to T-Rex's "Bang the Gong".

Jake Gyllenhaal delivers a superb performance as the main character "Swoff". This movie is told from his point-of-view and narration. After scoring a big reputation for his portrayal of Ray Charles in the biographical movie "RAY", Jamie Foxx consistently keeps up his stature with a commanding performance as Staff Sgt. Sykes, always a tough and headstrong leader. Also appearing in films such as "Skeleton Key" and "Flightplan", Peter Sarsgaard has become a familiar face in Hollywood movies. But he now etches his reputation with this movie as he plays Troy, Swoff's closest buddy and sniper partner, who oftentimes acts as the big brother of their platoon.

it is right to call it a war drama but it is better to call it a soldier story. JARHEAD is an eye-opening film that is never to be missed, especially to those who love stories about war-life. JARHEAD is superb, witty, and OUTSTANDING!
